How Much Sunscreen Do You Need? The Complete Guide to Applying SPF

Are You Using Enough Sunscreen?

Choosing the right SPF is important - but how much you apply matters just as much.

Even an SPF 50 sunscreen can't provide its labelled protection if you apply too little. So, how much sunscreen do you actually need?

The NHS recommends around 6-8 teaspoons of sunscreen for an adult's entire body when exposed to the sun. (NHS)

Here's our simple guide to getting your SPF application right.

How Much Sunscreen Do You Need for Your Face?

For your face, neck and ears, a useful everyday guide is the two-finger rule:

Apply a line of sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers.

This gives you a simple visual measurement without needing to weigh or measure your SPF.

If your sunscreen has specific application instructions, always follow the product's directions.

Don't forget your:

  • Ears
  • Neck
  • Hairline
  • Eyelids/around the eyes, where appropriate for the product
  • Lips — using a dedicated SPF lip product

How Much Sunscreen Do You Need for Your Body?

For full-body protection, the NHS recommends approximately 6–8 teaspoons for an adult.

A practical way to think about it is roughly one teaspoon for each major body area, including:

  • One arm
  • The other arm
  • Front of the body
  • Back of the body
  • One leg
  • The other leg
  • Face and neck

You don't need to get your measuring spoons out every time — the key takeaway is simply don't skimp.

When Should You Apply Sunscreen?

Apply sunscreen before going outside, allowing enough time for it to form an effective layer on your skin according to the product instructions.

Then remember to reapply regularly.

You should always reapply after:

  • Swimming
  • Sweating
  • Exercise
  • Towel drying
  • Any activity that may remove or rub off your sunscreen

Even water-resistant sunscreen needs reapplication after swimming or towel drying. (NHS)

The Most Commonly Missed Areas

It's surprisingly easy to protect your face and arms while forgetting the places that need SPF too.

Don't forget:

☀️ Ears
☀️ Neck
☀️ Hairline
☀️ Shoulders
☀️ Chest
☀️ Backs of hands
☀️ Tops of feet
☀️ Hair parting or thinning areas of the scalp

And remember that lips need protection too - look for a dedicated lip balm with SPF.

Does More Sunscreen Mean More Protection?

Not exactly, but using too little can mean significantly less protection than you expect.

Your SPF rating is based on applying a specific amount of product during testing. Applying a thin layer of SPF 50 doesn't magically give you SPF 50 protection.

So rather than worrying about whether SPF 30 or SPF 50 is "better", focus on three things:

Apply enough. Apply it evenly. Reapply regularly.
