Q&A with Australian Gold's Marketing Executive, Sophie Newing

Australian Gold was founded in 1985 by Trevor Gray. Through his mother's Australian heritage, his love for the Aussie lifestyle began to grow. The beautiful landscapes, vibrant culture and a strong passion for all things sun and surf fascinated Gray. Australian Gold was born with aims to fully embrace the active Aussie lifestyle that Gray was so fond of.   

At the time, there was a clear gap in the tanning market - most products focused only on colour, without deeply considering skin benefits or overall consumer experience. Australian Gold was different - they created products that would not only give great tanning results but also nourish the skin, smell amazing and deliver real benefits that people can feel.   

With a fresh approach to what a tanning lotion should do and our iconic koala mascot, Sydney, the brand quickly stood out as a high-quality and enjoyable choice for tanning and skincare.

What makes Australian Gold products different?

What’s your favourite moment in nature? 

My favourite moment in nature would have to be lying on the beach in the late afternoon sun, when it cools down slightly, the sky starts to glow, and you can hear the waves crash in the background. You just can’t beat a pretty sunset.

What does your daily skincare or suncare routine look like? 

My mornings always start with drinking water and applying SPF - no exceptions. I use a light moisturiser with broad-spectrum SPF, followed by the SPF 50 Face Guard Stick if I’m outside. At night, it’s all about cleansing, repairing, and moisturising, and using a Tan Extender to prolong my tan! Skin prep and aftercare are key. 

What are your 2–3 favourite Australian Gold products? 

• Moisture Lock – I use this daily and it keeps my skin looking hydrated all year long!
• SPF 50 Spray Gel with Bronzer – SPF 50 is a must, and the added hint of bronzer gives me the BEST tan
• Rapid Tanning Intensifier Lotion - For an even better glow, this is my go-to outdoor tanning lotion!

What’s one skincare tip you swear by? 

Never skip exfoliation - especially before tanning. It helps the product apply evenly, prevents patchiness, and gives you a smoother finish. Your skin will thank you for it!
