Q&A with Altruist co-founder and dermatologist Dr Andrew Birnie

Altruist was co-founded in 2015 by Dr Andrew Birnie, UK skin cancer surgeon and consultant dermatologist, and economist David Westerbeek van Eerten. They became good friends whilst learning to surf during time spent working in South Africa. They both noticed the immense 'hunger' for margin in the industry, and the domination of a few major sunscreen brands, which resulted in high prices for sunscreen, thus reducing its use and not helping in the aim to reduce the incidence of skin cancer. Altruist was born from the desire to reduce the incidence of skin cancer by removing the barriers to using high-quality sunscreen products.
What makes Altruist products different?
All Altruist products are focused on delivering high-quality, dermatology-based formulations. Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, lightweight, and excellent protection against both UVA and UVB in case of the SPF range products. The sunscreen products all have significantly higher UVA protection than the European standard to ensure uniform protection across the whole UV spectrum. All with highly competitive prices. Additionally, Altruist donates 10p worth of sunscreen for each product sold to charities supporting children with albinism in Africa.
What's your favourite moment in nature?
Watching the sun come up is a true privilege; I have wonderful memories of the sun rising over the Kruger, just as the animals are waking. I also love walking along the shore with my feet in the sand.
What does your daily skincare or suncare routine look like?
After a shower, I will moisturise my lower legs with Altruist Dry Skin Repair Cream or Body Lotion. I shave, then apply Altruist Face Fluid SPF50 to my entire face, ears and neck. In the evening, I wash my face with Altruist Cleansing Foam, rinse clean, and that is it (I have fairly oily skin).
What are your favourite Altruist products?
The Face Fluid SPF50, Cleansing Foam and Dry Skin Repair Cream - the last one is because I have seen it transform the skin of so many people with dry, inflamed, flaky skin!
What's one skincare tip you swear by?
Sunscreen on your face every morning from March to October.
What does it mean to be part of the Sun & Skin brand community?
I welcome every opportunity to allow people to enjoy the outdoors safely. Partnering with trusted brands helps spread the word (and the sunscreen!)
