How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin Type & Skin Tone

Choosing a sunscreen isn't just about picking the highest SPF. Your skin type, skin tone and individual skin concerns all play a role in finding a formula you'll actually enjoy wearing every day.

We've worked with Consultant Dermatologist Dr Adil Sheraz (MBBS, BMedSci(Hons), MRCP (UK), MRCP (Dermatology) (UK)) to help make that decision easier. Together, we've developed our Skin Quiz, curated our Dermatologist Picks collection and created helpful filters that allow you to shop by skin type and skin concern.

Does Your Skin Tone Affect Which SPF You Need?

Every skin tone benefits from daily sun protection. While fairer skin (Fitzpatrick Skin Types I-II) burns more easily, medium to darker skin tones (Types III-VI) are still at risk of sun damage, premature skin ageing and pigmentation caused by UV exposure.

Dr Sheraz recommends:

  • Skin Types I-II: Minimum SPF 30 for the body and SPF 50 for the face with high UVA protection.
  • Skin Types III-VI: Minimum SPF 30 with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Tinted or sheer formulas may be preferred to minimise visible white cast on deeper skin tones.

Finding SPF for Your Skin Type

Oily & Acne-Prone Skin

Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that won't leave skin feeling greasy.

Look for:

  • Niacinamide
  • Lightweight fluids or gels
  • Fast-absorbing textures

Avoid if possible:

Heavy, occlusive formulas if you're prone to breakouts.

Dry Skin

Dry skin benefits from sunscreen that also supports the skin barrier.

Look for:

  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Glycerin
  • Squalane
  • Ceramides

These ingredients help keep skin hydrated while protecting against UV damage.

Sensitive Skin

If your skin reacts easily, choose fragrance-free formulas designed specifically for sensitive skin.

Look for:

  • Mineral UV filters where suitable
  • Minimal ingredient lists
  • Dermatologist-tested formulas

Combination & Normal Skin

Most modern sunscreen textures work well for combination and normal skin. Choose a formula you'll enjoy applying every day, whether that's a lightweight fluid, lotion or mineral sunscreen.

Shop by Skin Concern

Not every sunscreen suits every concern, which is why we've made it easy to filter products for concerns including:

  • Sensitive skin
  • Acne-prone skin
  • Rosacea
  • Pigmentation
  • Dry skin
  • Oily skin

Our website filters help you quickly narrow down products that are better suited to your skin's individual needs.
